Welcome to the Fediverser Project Home Page
The Fediverser Project is a set of tools that are built to help people move their social media activity away from traditional, corporate-controlled sites into the open, ActivityPub-powered decentralized applications and platforms that are commonly called "the Fediverse".
Its development started as a response to the drastic changes of API pricing policy from Reddit, Inc. The reasoning was that any sort of "blackout" protest would not be effective as long as there is no real alternative for the people to use.
The idea then is to provide a set of services that can let users sign-in using their existing Reddit accounts, and use the information available on their profile to provide the following functionality:
- Automatically select the instance that would be most compatible with the user.
- Automatically subscribe the user to all the "Fediverse" communities that are considered suitable alternatives to their favorite subreddits
- Management of different content feeds to help people bootstrap the communities that haven't reached a substantial userbase.
Advantages
Allowing users to signup using their existing Reddit credentials brings the following benefits:
- Users from Reddit do not have to learn the nuances of the Fediverse from the start. The whole process of finding an instance and understanding the differences of "user@server" are still usability roadblocks for the majority of people. By creating an account with the same username as their reddit account and automatically selecting a server for them, these issues are mitigated.
- By automatically subscribing them to a recommended alternative, the issues of "content discovery" and "network fragmentation" are solved.
How is this site organized
This site contains the organization divided in two main sections:
- The Admin Guide is suitable for other Lemmy instance admins that would like to run the Fediverser services that integrate with Lemmy
- The User Manual is meant to provide tutorials, explainers and cookbooks for people who are in the Fediverse and want to help with the curation of the database or with the community management features.
